"statement": "# Wootters: exact entanglement-of-formation formula for arbitrary two-qubit states\n\n## How entangled is a noisy pair?\n\nFor a pure two-qubit state, entanglement can be read from the uncertainty of either subsystem. A mixed state is harder: many different ensembles of pure states can produce the same density matrix. Entanglement of formation asks for the smallest average entanglement among all such ensembles. Searching every ensemble looks formidable. Wootters obtained an exact formula for every two-qubit density matrix, turning that optimization into a finite calculation with a guaranteed optimal decomposition.\n\n## One intermediate quantity organizes the answer\n\nThe formula first computes concurrence, a number between zero and one, from the state and its spin-flipped partner. Spin flip is a precisely defined matrix operation here, not a physical instruction to rotate a laboratory device until a desired answer appears. Ordered spectral quantities determine concurrence, and a binary entropy function converts it into entanglement of formation. The source also constructs an optimal ensemble containing at most four pure states.\n\n## Check three values without solving the whole theorem\n\nWhen concurrence is zero, the formula gives zero entanglement of formation. When it is one, it gives one bit. For an invented intermediate check with concurrence 0.6, the square root of one minus concurrence squared is 0.8. The binary-entropy argument is therefore 0.9, whose entropy is about 0.469 bits. This tests the arithmetic and endpoints of the expression. It does not establish that a particular laboratory state has that concurrence.\n\n## A complete two-qubit answer still has boundaries\n\nTwo qubits form a central and useful target, so solving that target exactly matters even though larger systems remain difficult. The paper does not extend the formula to arbitrary dimensions or multipartite states. It also does not prove that the single-copy convex-roof value is additive or always equals a regularized asymptotic preparation cost. Earlier work with Scott Hill supplied special cases and the conjectured expression; that predecessor credit remains visible.\n\n## Build a reproducible formula card\n\nAsk your agent to state the matrix definition, ordering convention, entropy base and allowed dimensions, then verify the three classroom values. Require a source locator for the optimal-ensemble statement and a separate note about the earlier Hill-Wootters contribution. If it cannot check a matrix convention, leave that item unresolved. The card can be reused to prevent a later reader from confusing an exact single-copy formula with a general theorem about asymptotic entanglement cost.\n\n## Scientific scope\n\nThis formula is for two qubits, not arbitrary higher-dimensional or multipartite states. The paper does not prove entanglement-of-formation additivity or equality with a regularized asymptotic entanglement cost. The earlier Hill-Wootters concurrence conjecture and rank-at-most-two proof are antecedents, not solely invented in this later sole-author proof.\n\n## Sources for this explanation\n\n- [Entanglement of Formation of an Arbitrary State of Two Qubits](https://arxiv.org/pdf/quant-ph/9709029v2): Original exact-version statement, construction and limitations; source-specific byline and contribution scope retained.\n",
