"statement": "# Li and colleagues: inference-time activation intervention for truthful answers\n\n## Can internal signals help recover a better answer?\n\nInference-Time Intervention identifies selected attention-head directions from truth-labeled examples and changes activations during generation. An attention head is one component of a transformer's information-processing mechanism. The original tests whether targeted changes improve answers on TruthfulQA, a particular benchmark of questions that can expose common mistaken beliefs.\n\n## The labels are part of the method\n\nUnlike an unsupervised consistency objective, this direction and head selection use labeled examples. That is a resource and an assumption, not a flaw to hide. Internal activation access is also required. A user of an ordinary hosted chatbot cannot assume the same intervention is available just because the method changes answers at inference time.\n\n## Keep the benchmark denominator visible\n\nImagine an invented test with twenty questions: a system improves from eight truthful answers to twelve. That is an increase from 40% to 60% on this test, or twenty percentage points. It does not mean every future answer has a 60% probability of being true. The actual research has its own dataset and evaluation; these classroom numbers are not its measurements. In an invented ten-question exercise, four correct answers before an intervention and six afterward would be a gain of twenty percentage points. That small count alone would not establish a reliable improvement: the selected questions, repeated trials and other changes still matter. Write down which answers changed and check them individually, rather than keeping only the nicer aggregate number.\n\n## Better truthfulness can have a cost\n\nThe original reports a tradeoff between measured truthfulness and helpfulness as intervention strength changes. Stronger steering is not automatically a better product. Benchmark results also do not prove the existence of a universal truth detector. The credited contribution is the supervised attention-head intervention and its bounded evidence, rather than every later truthfulness or activation-steering result.\n\n## A practical reading task\n\nCreate a small comparison table for the paper's intervention settings: what is optimized, what is measured and what gets worse. Preserve unknown costs or untested models as unknown. Someone choosing a method needs these tradeoffs more than a single impressive percentage. Reading and checking this table is possible before attempting an expensive replication.\n\n## Scientific scope\n\nDirection and head selection use supervision and access to internal activations. Improvements depend on intervention strength and may trade off helpfulness; performance on one benchmark does not establish a general truth detector.\n\n## Sources for this explanation\n\n- [Inference-Time Intervention: Eliciting Truthful Answers from a Language Model](https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.03341v1): Pinned original contribution and stated hypotheses or experimental limits.\n",
